3 Ways High Humidity Can Affect Your Health

June 14, 2019 | Blog

Humidity levels in your Baton Rouge, Metairie or Kenner Louisiana home can get a bit out of control. As a result, your home can suddenly no longer feel like the comfortable haven you love. But, did you know that incorrect humidity levels can also impact your family’s health? Read on to find out how high indoor humidity levels can affect your health.

Trigger Asthma

Biological growth, ground-level ozone and dust mites are three known asthma triggers. They all increase in humid environments.

Ozone, a common air pollutant that rises with high humidity, makes it harder to breathe deeply. As humidity levels rise, so do ozone levels, triggering asthma attacks.

Dust mites and biological growth thrive in humid conditions. Damp areas in your home, such as your bathroom, are prime spots for biological growth to flourish. To reduce the problem in your bathroom, ventilate the area well by opening windows or turning on exhaust fans.

Dehydration

To keep cool, our bodies produce sweat. But we only stay cool if our sweat evaporates. In a humid environment, it’s difficult for the air to absorb the moisture from your body, leading to loss of body fluid and eventual dehydration.

Heat Exhaustion

Dehydration causes heat exhaustion. As this sets in, you’ll feel dizzy, weak, muscle cramps or even faint. To avoid this, it’s important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids to keep hydrated. Also, avoid exerting yourself physically.

Check that your home’s humidity level is between 30 and 50 percent by using a hygrometer. Take action against high humidity in your home by:

  • Installing a whole-home dehumidifier
  • Turning on your extraction fans when you cook or shower
  • Having indoor plants that absorb moisture from the air
