Instead of burning fuel to create heat, an electric furnace passes electrical current through a series of metal heating elements, similar in principle to how an electric space heater or hair dryer works, just on a much larger scale. The elements heat up, and a blower fan pushes air across them and into your ductwork.

How Does an Electric Furnace Work? Step by Step

  1. The thermostat sends a signal. When the temperature in your home drops below the set point, the thermostat sends a signal to the furnace to begin a heating cycle.

Electric furnaces convert 100% of the electrical energy they consume into heat, giving them an efficiency rating of 1.0 or 100%. Gas furnaces, even high-efficiency models, lose some energy through exhaust gases.

However, because electricity typically costs more per unit of heat produced than natural gas, the lower operating cost advantage of gas furnaces often outweighs the efficiency rating difference. The right choice depends on your local utility rates.

Electric Furnace vs. Heat Pump

For most Baton Rouge homeowners, this is the more relevant comparison. Both systems are electric, but they work very differently.

A heat pump does not generate heat by converting electricity. Instead, it moves heat from one place to another using refrigerant, the same process your air conditioner uses in reverse during winter.
